Our puppies’ health begins
with well-protected parents.

Titan et Lulu, Leonbergers de l'élevage Corleone, dans la neige

Hello to all our partner families,

At Corleone Leonbergers, the health, temperament and well-being of our breeding dogs are at the heart of our priorities.

We are putting in place a new, more rigorous preventive protocol for all our males and females intended for breeding.

Vaccination and the prevention of internal and external parasites are now mandatory requirements of our partner family program.

OUR GOAL

Protect our breeding dogs, prevent infectious and parasitic diseases, and ensure the best possible conditions for the birth of healthy puppies.

TRAVEL

Our dogs may need to travel, particularly to the United States, for our breeding program. Their health protection and documents must therefore be up to date.

1

Why this new protocol?

We want to strengthen prevention for two particularly important things: infectious diseases and parasites. We want to reduce the risks as much as possible even before breeding and, for our females, before the puppies are born.

Infectious diseases

Parvovirus in particular is a serious risk for young puppies. That is why we place great importance on vaccinating dogs intended for breeding.

Parasites

Don’t assume a dog has to live in the country or have visible worms to be exposed. A dog can come into contact with a contaminated environment and carry parasites without obvious symptoms. Young puppies are especially vulnerable.

2

VaccinationMANDATORY FOR ALL OUR BREEDING DOGS

Core vaccines

All our breeding males and females must be properly vaccinated and up to date. Our new protocol calls for a booster of the core vaccines every two years, subject to the schedule being confirmed by the veterinarian according to the vaccines given.

Partner families must:

  • Have their dog’s vaccination record checked every year.
  • Plan core vaccine boosters every two years according to our protocol and veterinary advice.
  • Follow the other boosters required for the vaccine used.
  • Let us know the vaccination dates and upcoming due dates.
  • Send us a copy of the vaccination record when requested.

Rabies vaccine

The rabies vaccine is mandatory in our breeding program. Some of our breeding dogs may need to travel to the United States: it is therefore important to keep a valid rabies vaccination and to check the applicable entry requirements before each trip.

Talk to your veterinarian to choose a vaccine whose period of validity suits the dog’s needs, including a product licensed for three years when appropriate. Respect the vaccine’s official expiry date and never let the protection lapse.

Don’t wait until a trip is planned to check the vaccination record.

Special requirement for females

A female’s vaccination must be done within the year of the pregnancy. We don’t want to wait until she comes into heat to find out a booster is needed. To learn more, contact us or check our partner families Messenger group, where you will be notified.

Checking the record, any necessary boosters and the related costs are the responsibility of the partner family.

Prevention of internal and external parasitesMANDATORY

All our breeding dogs must receive adequate parasite prevention. This prevention must cover:

Ticks

They can transmit certain diseases, including Lyme disease.

Fleas

They can cause infestations and skin problems.

Intestinal parasites

They can affect the dog’s health and contaminate its environment.

Prevention must be planned every year and given as often as needed to ensure adequate protection. Some products require several doses during the year.

Buying and giving parasite prevention products is the responsibility of the partner families, except for treatments expressly provided by Corleone Leonbergers. If in doubt about which product to use, contact us or talk to your veterinarian.

Special protocol for femalesINTENDED FOR BREEDING

BREEDING FEMALESPartner families

AT LEAST 1 MONTH BEFORE HEAT

Revolution

When a female is planned for breeding, she must receive Revolution at least one month before her expected heat, then continue the treatment monthly according to the veterinary protocol.

Example: if her heat is expected in March, the first dose must be planned in February, then repeated in March and throughout the indicated period.

Why Revolution?

  • Under the protocol established with our veterinarian, this is the product chosen for the period around breeding and pregnancy.
  • It protects against fleas and certain internal and external parasites, according to the product’s label.
  • It does not necessarily cover all types of ticks or intestinal parasites: additional protection may be needed according to veterinary recommendations.
  • For the rest of the year, another recommended parasite product may be used. When breeding is planned, switch to Revolution at least one month before the heat.

Buying and giving Revolution is the responsibility of the partner family.

FROM DAY 40 OF PREGNANCY

Panacur (fenbendazole)

In addition to parasite prevention, we plan to use Panacur starting on day 40 of pregnancy, according to the schedule and doses prescribed by our veterinarian. This treatment aims to strengthen the control of certain intestinal parasites before the puppies are born.

This part of the protocol is covered by Corleone Leonbergers: we will provide the Panacur along with precise instructions on how to give it.

Other responsibilities for all our breeding dogs

5

Quality food

Food plays an important role in the health and physical condition of our Leonbergers. All our breeding dogs must receive good-quality food suited to their age, size, physical condition and particular needs.

We ask that you keep your dog in good physical condition and pay particular attention to its diet.

If you have the slightest doubt about the quality of the food, contact us: we would rather advise you.

6

Socialization, an ongoing responsibility

A breeding Leonberger must have a stable, balanced and confident temperament. Socialization continues throughout its growth and adult life.

  • Meet different people, adults and children, in a safe setting.
  • Be used to the presence of other dogs.
  • Discover different environments.
  • Go for regular walks away from the house and the family property.
  • Be gradually exposed to the noises, movements and situations of everyday life.
  • Learn to stay calm and confident in new situations.

Having a large property does not replace walks, outings and socialization experiences.

7

Desensitization, preventing fears

Our breeding dogs must be gradually and positively accustomed to being handled and examined. In particular, they must learn to accept:

  • Handling of the paws, ears, mouth and body.
  • Brushing, grooming and the dryer.
  • Visits to the veterinarian and car rides.
  • Unfamiliar places and new situations.
  • People approaching and handling them.

The goal is not to force a dog to face what frightens it, but to gradually teach it, with patience and positive reinforcement, to feel safe.

If your dog shows fear, anxiety or unusual behaviour, contact us promptly.

8

Exercise and physical condition

Our breeding dogs must be able to enjoy an active, balanced life. Regular walks, activities suited to their age and opportunities to discover different environments are part of their development.

  • Maintain good muscle tone, adequate physical condition and good mobility.
  • Respect their growth, especially in young Leonbergers, which are a giant breed.
9

Communication with Corleone Leonbergers

We want to keep open communication with all our partner families.

If you have questions about your dog’s food, vaccination, parasite prevention, health, behaviour or development, never hesitate to contact us.

Follow-up for females: the heat and litter schedule is followed directly in our partner families Messenger group, where the families concerned will be notified. To learn more, contact us or check the Messenger group.

We would rather hear about a situation quickly than discover a problem once it is already well established.

Our commitment to our Leonbergers

At Corleone Leonbergers, we place great importance on the health, character and quality of life of our breeding dogs. Our males and females are an integral part of our breeding program, but above all they are family companions who deserve a happy, balanced and enriching life.

Their health and temperament are especially important, since we want to pass on to future generations the qualities that make the Leonberger’s reputation. This new protocol is being put in place with prevention in mind: we would rather act before problems appear.

We sincerely thank all our partner families for their commitment, their collaboration and the good care they give our boys and girls.

A good breeding dog is not just a beautiful dog. Above all, it is a dog that is healthy, balanced, confident and sound of mind.

Our puppies’ health begins with well-protected, well-prepared parents.
